What Exosomes Actually Are

Cells use them to send proteins, lipids, and genetic material to other cells, effectively carrying instructions from one place to another.

This matters for skin because so much of what we recognize as aging is a communication problem rather than a raw materials problem. Fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin, become less responsive over time. They receive fewer and weaker signals telling them to build and repair. Wang and colleagues published a scoping review of exosome-based therapies in dermatology in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology in the same year, surveying applications across rejuvenation, wound healing, and hair.

Perhaps the most useful reference for anyone evaluating a purchase is Knauer and colleagues, whose scoping review in Aesthetic Surgery Journal in 2026 examined both the clinical evidence and the commercial landscape for topical exosomes specifically. The distinction they draw is worth carrying into any shopping decision, because the commercial category has expanded considerably faster than the published evidence base. Products vary enormously in source material, concentration, processing method, and formulation quality, and the word on the label tells you very little about any of that.

Why the Category Deserves Scrutiny

Topical exosome products are regulated as cosmetics, not as drugs. They have not been evaluated by the FDA for the treatment of any condition, and no brand, ours included, should suggest otherwise.
